Configuration Reference
Primary format: TOML (recommended)
Location: ~/.config/dumber/config.toml
Also supports: JSON (.json) and YAML (.yaml)
JSON Schema: ~/.config/dumber/config.schema.json (auto-generated for JSON format)
Why TOML?
TOML is the recommended format for dumber configuration because:
- Clear structure: Explicit sections make complex configs easy to read and modify
- No ambiguity: No whitespace sensitivity or type coercion issues
- Comments supported: Add documentation directly in your config
- Industry standard: Used by Cargo, Hugo, and many modern tools
You can still use JSON or YAML if you prefer - dumber automatically detects the format.

focus-up = ["shift+arrowup", "shift+k"]
focus-down = ["shift+arrowdown", "shift+j"]

resize-decrease-up = ["K"]
resize-decrease-right = ["L"]
resize-increase = ["+", "="]
resize-decrease = ["-"]
confirm = ["enter"]
cancel = ["escape"]
Notes:
- Directional actions (
resize-increase-*/resize-decrease-*) move the split divider.
- Smart actions (
resize-increase / resize-decrease) grow/shrink the active pane (best-effort) by picking a direction automatically.
- Timeout is refreshed on each resize keypress so you can keep adjusting without re-entering the mode.

iHD driver (modern, for Broadwell+)
- NVIDIA: Uses
nvidia driver with EGL platform
Example:
[media]
hardware_decoding = "auto" # HW preferred, SW fallback

233consume-or-expel-left = ["bracketleft", "["]
234consume-or-expel-right = ["bracketright", "]"]
235consume-or-expel-up = ["shift+bracketleft", "braceleft", "{"]
236consume-or-expel-down = ["shift+bracketright", "braceright", "}"]
237
238focus-right = ["shift+arrowright", "shift+l"]

292resize-decrease = ["-"]
293confirm = ["enter"]
294cancel = ["escape"]
295```
296
297Notes:
298- Directional actions (`resize-increase-*/resize-decrease-*`) move the split divider.

314> **Note:** New tab creation uses modal tab mode (Ctrl+T then n/c). This follows the Zellij-style modal keyboard interface.
315>
316> **Note:** Consume-or-expel is experimental and may change behavior between releases.
317
318### Popup Behavior

352session_mode_color = "#9B59B6" # Purple for session mode
353resize_mode_color = "#00D4AA" # Teal for resize mode

391
392## Media

404- `auto` (recommended): Hardware preferred with software fallback - fixes Twitch Error #4000
405- `force`: Hardware only - fails if unavailable
406- `disable`: Software only - higher CPU usage
407
408**GL rendering modes:**
409- `auto` (default): Let GStreamer choose the best OpenGL API

411- `gl3`: Force OpenGL 3.x desktop
412- `none`: Disable GL-based rendering
413
414**GPU auto-detection:**
415Dumber automatically detects your GPU vendor (AMD/Intel/NVIDIA) and sets optimal VA-API driver settings:
416- **AMD**: Uses `radeonsi` driver
417- **Intel**: Uses `iHD` driver (modern, for Broadwell+)
418- **NVIDIA**: Uses `nvidia` driver with EGL platform
419
420**Example:**
421```toml
422[media]
423hardware_decoding = "auto" # HW preferred, SW fallback
424prefer_av1 = false # Let site choose codec
425show_diagnostics = false # Enable for debugging
426force_vsync = false # Let compositor handle VSync
427gl_rendering_mode = "auto" # GStreamer picks best GL API
428gstreamer_debug_level = 0 # Increase to 3-5 for debugging
429```
430
431**Diagnostics CLI:**
432```bash
433# Check GStreamer plugins and VA-API status
434dumber doctor --media
435```
436

441| `runtime.prefix` | string | `""` | Optional runtime prefix (e.g., `/opt/webkitgtk`) used to locate newer GTK/WebKitGTK installs |
442
443If set, dumber prepends prefix-derived paths to:
444- `PKG_CONFIG_PATH` (for version checks)
445- `LD_LIBRARY_PATH` (for runtime library loading)
446- `GI_TYPELIB_PATH` (GObject introspection)
447- `XDG_DATA_DIRS` (schemas/resources)
448
449**Example:**
450```toml
451[runtime]

453```
454

476[update]
477enable_on_startup = true # Check for updates on startup
478auto_download = false # Don't auto-download (prompt instead)
479notify_on_new_settings = true # Show toast when config migration available
480```
481
482**CLI Commands:**

486
487# Add missing settings with default values

489
490# Skip confirmation prompt
491dumber config migrate --yes
492```
493
494## Environment Variables
495

498```bash
499# Database
500DUMBER_DATABASE_PATH=/custom/path/db.sqlite
501
