Configuration Reference

Primary format: TOML (recommended) Location: ~/.config/dumber/config.toml Also supports: JSON (.json) and YAML (.yaml) JSON Schema: ~/.config/dumber/config.schema.json (auto-generated for JSON format)

Why TOML?

TOML is the recommended format for dumber configuration because:

  • Clear structure: Explicit sections make complex configs easy to read and modify
  • No ambiguity: No whitespace sensitivity or type coercion issues
  • Comments supported: Add documentation directly in your config
  • Industry standard: Used by Cargo, Hugo, and many modern tools

You can still use JSON or YAML if you prefer - dumber automatically detects the format.

# Consume-or-expel (niri-style) - very alpha
consume-or-expel-left = ["["]
consume-or-expel-right = ["]"]
consume-or-expel-up = ["{"]
consume-or-expel-down = ["}"]

focus-right = ["shift+arrowright", "shift+l"]

resize-decrease = ["-"]
confirm = ["enter"]
cancel = ["escape"]

Notes:

  • Directional actions (resize-increase-*/resize-decrease-*) move the split divider.
  • Smart actions (resize-increase / resize-decrease) grow/shrink the active pane (best-effort) by picking a direction automatically.
  • Timeout is refreshed on each resize keypress so you can keep adjusting without re-entering the mode.

Global Shortcuts

Global shortcuts are configured under workspace.shortcuts.actions using the same ActionBinding structure as modal keybindings:

Action Default Keys Description
close_pane ctrl+w Close active pane (closes tab if last pane)

  keys = ["ctrl+w"]
  desc = "Close active pane"

[workspace.shortcuts.actions.next_tab]
  keys = ["ctrl+tab", "alt+l"]
  desc = "Switch to next tab"

Tip: Use dumb://config → Keybindings tab to edit shortcuts visually.

238
239# Consume-or-expel (niri-style) - very alpha
240consume-or-expel-left = ["["]
241consume-or-expel-right = ["]"]
242consume-or-expel-up = ["{"]
243consume-or-expel-down = ["}"]
244
245focus-right = ["shift+arrowright", "shift+l"]
246focus-left = ["shift+arrowleft", "shift+h"]
247focus-up = ["shift+arrowup", "shift+k"]
248focus-down = ["shift+arrowdown", "shift+j"]
249confirm = ["enter"]
250cancel = ["escape"]
251```
252
253> **Note:** Actions are inverted to key→action map in memory for O(1) lookup performance during navigation.
254

266new-tab = ["n", "c"]
267close-tab = ["x"]
268next-tab = ["l", "tab"]
269previous-tab = ["h", "shift+tab"]
270rename-tab = ["r"]
271confirm = ["enter"]
272cancel = ["escape"]
273```
274
275> **Note:** Actions are inverted to key→action map in memory for O(1) lookup performance during navigation.
276

293resize-increase-right = ["l", "arrowright"]
294resize-decrease-left = ["H"]
295resize-decrease-down = ["J"]
296resize-decrease-up = ["K"]
297resize-decrease-right = ["L"]
298resize-increase = ["+", "="]
299resize-decrease = ["-"]
300confirm = ["enter"]
301cancel = ["escape"]
302```
303
304Notes:
305- Directional actions (`resize-increase-*/resize-decrease-*`) move the split divider.
306- Smart actions (`resize-increase` / `resize-decrease`) grow/shrink the active pane (best-effort) by picking a direction automatically.
307- Timeout is refreshed on each resize keypress so you can keep adjusting without re-entering the mode.
308
309### Global Shortcuts
310
311Global shortcuts are configured under `workspace.shortcuts.actions` using the same `ActionBinding` structure as modal keybindings:
312
313| Action | Default Keys | Description |
314|--------|--------------|-------------|
315| `close_pane` | `ctrl+w` | Close active pane (closes tab if last pane) |
316| `next_tab` | `ctrl+tab` | Switch to next tab |
317| `previous_tab` | `ctrl+shift+tab` | Switch to previous tab |
318| `consume_or_expel_left` | `alt+[` | Consume into left sibling stack, or expel left if stacked |
319| `consume_or_expel_right` | `alt+]` | Consume into right sibling stack, or expel right if stacked |
320| `consume_or_expel_up` | `alt+{` | Consume into upper sibling stack, or expel up if stacked |
321| `consume_or_expel_down` | `alt+}` | Consume into lower sibling stack, or expel down if stacked |
322
323**Example:**
324```toml
325[workspace.shortcuts.actions.close_pane]
326  keys = ["ctrl+w"]
327 desc = "Close active pane"
328
329[workspace.shortcuts.actions.next_tab]
330  keys = ["ctrl+tab", "alt+l"]
331 desc = "Switch to next tab"
332```
333
334> **Tip:** Use `dumb://config` → Keybindings tab to edit shortcuts visually.
335>
336> **Note:** New tab creation uses modal tab mode (Ctrl+T then n/c). This follows the Zellij-style modal keyboard interface.
337>
338> **Note:** Consume-or-expel is experimental and may change behavior between releases.
339
340### Popup Behavior

434- `none`: Disable GL-based rendering
435
436**GPU auto-detection:**
437Dumber automatically detects your GPU vendor (AMD/Intel/NVIDIA) and sets optimal VA-API driver settings:
438- **AMD**: Uses `radeonsi` driver
439- **Intel**: Uses `iHD` driver (modern, for Broadwell+)
440- **NVIDIA**: Uses `nvidia` driver with EGL platform
441
442**Example:**

483When enabled, selecting text in a web page immediately copies it to the clipboard with a brief toast notification. Does not apply to text selection in input fields or textareas.
484
485**Example:**
486```toml
487[clipboard]
488auto_copy_on_selection = true  # Enabled by default

525
526# Skip confirmation prompt
527dumber config migrate --yes
528```
529
530## Performance Profiles
531
532Performance profiles provide preset configurations for WebKitGTK tuning. These settings affect Skia rendering threads, memory pressure handling, and WebView pool behavior.
533
534> **Note:** Performance settings are applied at browser startup. Changes require a restart to take effect.
535
536| Key | Type | Default | Valid Values | Description |
537|-----|------|---------|--------------|-------------|
538| `performance.profile` | string | `"default"` | `default`, `lite`, `max`, `custom` | Performance profile selection |
539
540### Profiles
541
542| Profile | Description | Use Case |
543|---------|-------------|----------|
544| `default` | No tuning, uses WebKit defaults | Normal browsing, most users |
545| `lite` | Reduced resource usage | Low-RAM systems (< 4GB), battery saving |
546| `max` | Maximum responsiveness | Heavy pages (GitHub PRs, complex SPAs), high-end systems |
547| `custom` | Manual control over all settings | Advanced users who want fine-grained control |
548
549### Profile Settings Matrix
550

552|---------|---------|------|-----|
553| Skia CPU threads | unset | 2 | `NumCPU()/2` (min 4) |
554| Skia GPU threads | unset | unset | scales with VRAM |
555| Web process memory (MB) | unset | 768 | unset |
556| Network process memory (MB) | unset | 384 | unset |
557| Conservative threshold | unset | 0.25 | unset |
558| Strict threshold | unset | 0.4 | unset |
559| WebView pool prewarm | 4 | 2 | scales with RAM |
560
561**Example:**
562```toml
563[performance]
564profile = "default" # Most users - no tuning needed
565
566# For low-RAM systems:
567# profile = "lite"
568
569# For heavy pages (GitHub PRs, complex web apps):
570# profile = "max"
571
572# For manual control:
573# profile = "custom"
574```
575

596**Custom profile example:**
597```toml
598[performance]
599profile = "custom"
600
601# Skia threading - tune for your CPU
602skia_cpu_painting_threads = 4
603skia_gpu_painting_threads = 2
604
605# Web process memory pressure
606web_process_memory_limit_mb = 1024
607web_process_memory_conservative_threshold = 0.4
608web_process_memory_strict_threshold = 0.6
609
610# WebView pool
611webview_pool_prewarm_count = 6
612```
613
614> **Important:** Individual tuning fields are ignored unless `profile = "custom"`. Setting individual fields with any other profile will produce a validation warning.

616## Downloads
617
618| Key | Type | Default | Description |
619|-----|------|---------|-------------|
620| `downloads.path` | string | `""` | Download directory path (empty = `$XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR` or `~/Downloads`) |
621
622Downloads are saved to the configured directory with toast notifications for download started, completed, and failed events.
623
624**Example:**
625```toml
626[downloads]
627path = ""  # Use system default ($XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR or ~/Downloads)
628
629# Or specify a custom directory:
630# path = "/home/user/my-downloads"
631```
632
633## Environment Variables
634
635All config values can be overridden via environment variables with the prefix `DUMBER_`:
636
637```bash
638# Database
639DUMBER_DATABASE_PATH=/custom/path/db.sqlite
640
641# Rendering (examples)
642# Defaults: rendering.disable_dmabuf_renderer=false, rendering.gsk_renderer="auto"
643DUMBER_RENDERING_MODE=cpu
644# DUMBER_RENDERING_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=true
645# DUMBER_RENDERING_GSK_RENDERER=opengl
646DUMBER_DEFAULT_WEBPAGE_ZOOM=1.5
647
648# Logging
649DUMBER_LOG_LEVEL=debug
650DUMBER_LOG_FORMAT=json

Keyboard shortcuts

Single-key shortcuts are on. ctrl k and esc work whatever this says.

ctrl k :
go to a section, branch, tag, file or repository
?
this list
j k
move the row cursor down / up
enter
open the row under the cursor; on Files, a directory opens or closes in place
↑ ↓ ← → home end
in the file tree (focus on a row): previous / next row, close / open a directory or go to its parent / first entry, first / last row. They never open a file
l h
on Files: open a directory or a file / close a directory or go up to its parent, then to the parent page. Elsewhere: into the side panel (on a merge request, its files) / back to the content; there j k move between its controls
g g G
first / last row
/
filter the list; on Files, find a file anywhere in the repository (esc clears, enter opens the best match)
b
switch branch or tag
g s g f g c g b g m g i g r g a
tabs: summary, files, commits, branches & tags, merge requests, issues, releases, actions (when available)
g h
home
w
wide mode: use the whole width of the screen, or not (remembered)
y
copy a permalink pinned to the commit
d u x
diff: split / unified / collapse or expand all
e E
diff: the whole file in view / every file, with the lines the hunks hide
n
merge request: next note in the diff
esc
close a dialog, leave a field
