Feature Branch: 004-migrate-to-webkitgtk
Created: 2025-01-21
Status: Draft
Input: User description: "Migrate To webkitgtk-6.0, I Want to migrate the entire project to webkitgtk6 in order to be able to enable GPU rendering through vulkan layer"

Execution Flow (main)

1. Parse user description from Input
→ Migrate browser to WebKitGTK 6.0 for Vulkan GPU rendering
2. Extract key concepts from description
→ Identified: migration, WebKitGTK 6.0, GPU rendering, Vulkan support
3. For each unclear aspect:
→ Performance targets marked for clarification
→ Migration timeline marked for clarification
4. Fill User Scenarios & Testing section
→ User flow: Browser continues to work with improved GPU performance
5. Generate Functional Requirements
   → Each requirement is testable
   → Migration scope defined
6. Identify Key Entities
→ Browser engine, rendering pipeline, GPU acceleration
7. Run Review Checklist
→ WARN "Spec has uncertainties around performance targets"
8. Return: SUCCESS (spec ready for planning)

⚡ Quick Guidelines

  • ✅ Focus on WHAT users need and WHY
  • ❌ Avoid HOW to implement (no tech stack, APIs, code structure)
  • 👥 Written for business stakeholders, not developers

User Scenarios & Testing

Primary User Story

As a user of the dumber browser, I want the browser to utilize modern GPU acceleration capabilities through Vulkan rendering, resulting in smoother scrolling, faster page rendering, and improved performance for graphics-intensive web content, while maintaining all existing browser functionality.

Acceptance Scenarios

  1. Given a user opens the browser, When they navigate to any website, Then the browser renders pages using GPU acceleration when available
  2. Given a user visits a graphics-intensive website (e.g., with 3D content, animations), When the page loads, Then GPU rendering provides smooth performance without visual artifacts
  3. Given a system with Vulkan-capable GPU, When the browser starts, Then it automatically detects and enables GPU acceleration
  4. Given a system without Vulkan support, When the browser starts, Then it gracefully falls back to software rendering
  5. Given the browser is using GPU acceleration, When monitoring system resources, Then CPU usage is reduced compared to software rendering

Edge Cases

  • What happens when GPU drivers are outdated or incompatible?
  • How does system handle GPU driver crashes during browsing?
  • What happens on systems with multiple GPUs (integrated + discrete)?
  • How does browser perform on low-end GPUs vs high-end GPUs?
  • What happens when switching between GPU and software rendering mid-session?

Requirements

Functional Requirements

  • FR-001: System MUST maintain all existing browser functionality after migration
  • FR-002: System MUST support GPU-accelerated rendering when Vulkan-capable hardware is available
  • FR-003: System MUST provide fallback to software rendering when GPU acceleration is unavailable
  • FR-004: System MUST maintain backward compatibility with existing user data (bookmarks, history, settings)
  • FR-005: System MUST preserve current browser interface and user experience
  • FR-006: System MUST detect GPU capabilities at startup and choose appropriate rendering path
  • FR-007: System MUST handle GPU driver failures gracefully without crashing
  • FR-008: Browser performance MUST improve by [NEEDS CLARIFICATION: specific performance target not specified - 20%? 50%? What metrics?]
  • FR-009: System MUST support common web standards (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript) without regression
  • FR-010: System MUST maintain support for all previously working websites
  • FR-011: GPU memory usage MUST remain within [NEEDS CLARIFICATION: acceptable limits not specified]
  • FR-012: Migration MUST be completed within [NEEDS CLARIFICATION: timeline not specified]

Key Entities

  • Browser Engine: Core rendering engine that processes and displays web content
  • GPU Rendering Pipeline: System component responsible for hardware-accelerated graphics
  • Fallback Renderer: Software-based rendering system for non-GPU scenarios
  • Performance Monitor: Component tracking rendering performance and resource usage
  • Compatibility Layer: System ensuring existing functionality works with new rendering engine

Review & Acceptance Checklist

GATE: Automated checks run during main() execution

Content Quality

  • No implementation details (languages, frameworks, APIs)
  • Focused on user value and business needs
  • Written for non-technical stakeholders
  • All mandatory sections completed

Requirement Completeness

  • No [NEEDS CLARIFICATION] markers remain
  • Requirements are testable and unambiguous (except marked items)
  • Success criteria are measurable (performance targets needed)
  • Scope is clearly bounded
  • Dependencies and assumptions identified

Execution Status

Updated by main() during processing

  • User description parsed
  • Key concepts extracted
  • Ambiguities marked
  • User scenarios defined
  • Requirements generated
  • Entities identified
  • Review checklist passed (has clarifications needed)

Keyboard shortcuts

Single-key shortcuts are on. ctrl k and esc work whatever this says.

ctrl k :
go to a section, branch, tag, file or repository
?
this list
j k
move the row cursor down / up
enter
open the row under the cursor; on Files, a directory opens or closes in place
↑ ↓ ← → home end
in the file tree (focus on a row): previous / next row, close / open a directory or go to its parent / first entry, first / last row. They never open a file
l h
on Files: open a directory or a file / close a directory or go up to its parent, then to the parent page. Elsewhere: into the side panel (on a merge request, its files) / back to the content; there j k move between its controls
g g G
first / last row
/
filter the list; on Files, find a file anywhere in the repository (esc clears, enter opens the best match)
b
switch branch or tag
g s g f g c g b g m g i g r g a
tabs: summary, files, commits, branches & tags, merge requests, issues, releases, actions (when available)
g h
home
w
wide mode: use the whole width of the screen, or not (remembered)
y
copy a permalink pinned to the commit
d u x
diff: split / unified / collapse or expand all
e E
diff: the whole file in view / every file, with the lines the hunks hide
n
merge request: next note in the diff
esc
close a dialog, leave a field
